When Claire walks through an ancient stone circle, however, she is transported to Scotland in 1743. Claire Randall was a nurse during World War II and is enjoying a second honeymoon with her husband after returning from the war. The story begins in the Scottish Highlands in 1945. The first book in the series was released in 1992 and has thrilled readers ever since. The Outlander series contains nine bestselling novels written by Diana Gabaldon and has also been made into a popular TV show.

My first choice is one of the most popular historical romance series of all time. I’ve picked a variety of time periods and novel lengths so whatever you’re looking for, there is sure to be a book for you. I have recommended the 16 best historical romance novels that you must read. If you’re looking for your next must-read historical romance novel, then this list is for you. History and romance are a perfect marriage so it’s no wonder that historical romance has become such a lucrative and popular genre. Learning how our ancestors lived and the problems they faced has been the basis of many popular novels. There is no better way to escape the modern world than by diving into a book set hundreds of years ago. These books take the emotions of romance novels and set them in the past to create a wonderfully immersive story. One of the most successful sub-genres of romance is historical romance. Montgomery later shows up in Jude Deveraux’s The Maiden as a squire to that book’s hero, Rowan.Romance novels always bring a depth of emotion with them and can make you both laugh and cry. We do get to find out how the Montgomery family started, as Ranulf & Lyonene’s son is named Montgomery. However, when the two are separated due to Amicia, a jealous evil Frankish woman who tries to come between them, the story takes a bit of a downturn. He and Lyonene struggle to make their marriage work due to Ranulf’s turbulent nature. I loved how Lyonene makes her home on Ranulf’s fortress island, Malvoisin (it means “bad neighbor”), charming his retinue of black-haired knights while Ranulf is his grumpy self. A cruel monster of a man soon replaces the gentle man he seemed to be when they first met.

Lyonene has no idea what she’s getting herself into when she agrees to marry him so impetuously. They meet and Lyonene instantly falls for the much older Ranulf. Lady Lyonene is young, free-spirited, and really quite charming, while Ranulf de Warbrooke is a powerful and gruff knight.

But the second half faltered a bit as a devious woman’s scheming separates the two protagonists. To be fair, I loved the first half, of The Black Lyon. Being a medieval, I was was already inclined to like this book and it did no disappoint. The Black Lyon was my first Jude Deveraux read. Genres: Historical Romance, Bodice Ripper, Medieval Romance
